APPELATIONS


Appellation Alsace Grand Cru spends the strong influence of terroir on wine. It is awarded to wines that meet many criteria of quality, strict demarcation of land, yield more limited, specific rules of conduct of the vine, natural wealth minimal tasting pleasure...

Fifty-one land bounded by geological and climatic criteria are strict mosaic of wines from Alsace. The area of these exceptional vineyards varies between 3 and 80 hectares.

The label must state the year, one of the fifty-one localities can benefit from this designation, and usually indicates the variety. Among the Alsatian varietals are allowed except as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat.

The name Alsace Grand Cru vineyards of exceptional crown, which gives the wines an expressive force and a special authenticity.

The Grands Crus of Alsace represent an average annual production of about 45,000 hl, at only 4% of all of Alsatian wines.

Experts appointed by the National Institute of Appellations of Origin wines and spirits have defined these lands productive, numbering 51, and protect them by strict regulations.


To qualify for the AOC Alsace Grand Cru, under the decree of January 24, 2001, the wines must be made from grapes harvested by hand in soils strictly defined, within the area of production of vineyard.


Any grower wishing to produce AOC Alsace Grand Cru should be defined before March 1 of each year the varieties and plots that are designed for this production.
Apart from establishing production rules, the decree of January 24, 2001 strengthens the role of unions in the management of wine each locality Grand Cru (vine plans, specific opening dates for the harvest, can set a degree higher minimum alcohol for each locality and variety, setting the level of PLC annual per area ...).


Only four varieties are allowed in the AOC Alsace Grand Cru Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat d'Alsace.
However, the decree of March 21, 2005 authorizes the use of the Sylvaner grape in Alsace Grand Cru AOC Zotzenberg and blended wines in the AOC Alsace Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim.
The decree of January 12, 2007 also allows blended wines in the AOC Alsace Grand Cru Kaefferkopf.
